Motor Home Deductions: Done Right—
or Gone Entirely?

A motor home deduction sounds straightforward…
Until a court case wipes it out completely.
I’ve seen this happen more than once—and the Jackson case is a perfect example of how a solid deduction can be lost, not because it was wrong… but because it was positioned wrong.
Here are three points to consider:
- A motor home can be a powerful tax asset—but only if you classify it correctly. Is it transportation, lodging, or both? The answer drives everything.
- The IRS and courts don’t always see it your way. In Jackson, the taxpayers had a legitimate business purpose… and still lost the deduction entirely.
- Tax Tip: If your motor home qualifies as “away-from-home” business travel under Section 162, Section 280A(f)(4) can override the vacation home rules—but only if you assert it properly and document your use.
This is one of those areas where a small technical misstep can cost you tens—or hundreds—of thousands in deductions.
